Police in Kariega are investigating an armed robbery and an inquest after a suspected robber was shot and killed, a second one wounded and two other alleged accomplices arrested in Rosedale on Tuesday night.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the drama unfolded in Grasvoel Street when four men, two of whom were armed, entered the shop at around 5 pm.
She says a customer who entered the shop saw what was happening and raised the alarm, sparking a chase after the suspects involving community members and police.
During the pursuit, the suspect pointed their firearms at the police, who opened fire, fatally wounding one man, and injuring another.
She says one suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and collapsed in a yard in Falcon Street where he died.
The second suspect was shot in his upper leg and ankle and was taken to hospital.
Naidu says two other men were found hiding in a house in Osprey Street.
She says police confiscated stolen goods and two replica firearms.
The identity of the deceased is unknown at this stage.
