A suspected perlemoen poacher was shot and killed near the Dwesa game reserve on the Transkei Wild Coast this morning.
Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, says game rangers spotted five suspects in the area late last night.
The suspects fled and dropped a bag of perlemoen.
Manatha says the rangers suspected that the poachers may return to collect their loot - and they did at about 2AM.
The rangers fired shots and one of the suspects, believed to be between 35 and 40 years old, died at the scene.
The others fled.
Manatha says the deceased has not yet been identified and a murder case has been opened against the rangers.
