A suspected conman who walked out of a Port Elizabeth court last week but was rearrested in East London on Saturday, has done it again.
The 31-year-old suspect, identified elsewhere as Mark Michaels, managed to commandeer a police vehicle in Cambridge in East London, on Tuesday morning, while waiting in the back seat to be taken to court.
Police spokesperson, Captain Mluleki Mbi, says he managed to drive the police vehicle while in leg irons, but then collided with a BMW in Devereaux Avenue in Vincent.
He says the suspect was eventually cornered in Douglas Road in Vincent after crashing into a pavement.
Mbi says the suspect, who suffered no injuries, faces additional charges of escaping from lawful custody, theft of a motor vehicle as well as reckless and negligent driving.
These will be added to a growing charge sheet.
Mbi says an internal investigation will also be held into the circumstances surrounding this escape, with the aim of taking disciplinary or criminal action depending on the circumstances.
The Suspect was arrested in Port Elizabeth earlier this month and supplied officials with an incorrect identity number and Cape Town address.
Drama and confusion broke out at court when orderlies realised that the man had simply vanished ahead of his first appearance.
Video footage apparently shows that he simply walked out of the court room and left the building situated in North End.
