A man suspected of child abuse is in hospital after being beaten by angry residents in Kwa Nobuhle, Uitenhage.
Lieutenant colonel Priscilla Naidu says the man was allegedly beaten by residents over the weekend.
She says the child had gone missing on Saturday and when the suspect was seen with the boy, his father was initially thankful that he had been found.
However, when the boy claimed the man had abused him, the man was beaten by local residents.
The suspect will appear in court on release from hospital.
