A 34-year-old man who attacked his girlfriend with a knife and axe in front of several eyewitnesses will make his first court appearance in Mossel Bay on Wednesday.
The suspect, who cannot be named until his first court appearance, called the 25-year-old Naledi Phangindawo outside while she was attending a cultural function in KwaNonqaba on Saturday.
Eyewitnesses told police that the suspect attacked Naledi without any warning when she stepped outside the house.
He hacked her repeatedly over her entire body, including her face.
According to an eyewitness report, one person ran for help while another tried to stop the attack.
Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says he fled the scene when an ambulance arrived.
Naledi was declared dead upon her arrival at the hospital.
The suspect handed himself over to the Lwandile police in Cape Town on Sunday.
He has since been transported to Mossel Bay where he is in custody.
Hundreds of Mossel Bay residents gathered in KwaNonqaba on Monday and lit candles in remembrance of Naledi.
