Suspect shot and wounded by home owner in PE

A 38-year-old man who lives in Algoa Park in Port Elizabeth has shot and injured one of three robbery suspects who entered his home in Fairham Street on Friday morning.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says it is alleged that the complainant's wife was in the car and about to take their children to school when three unknown men approached her, pointing a firearm.

The mother was taken inside the house where they were confronted by her husband.

Naidu says the robbers entered the bedroom and stole some jewellery and during this time the husband managed to gain access to his firearm and proceeded to fire shots in their direction.

She says he managed to wound one of them in the abdomen.

His accomplices fired back and tried dragging their friend outside but eventually gave up and abandoned him in the yard before fleeing.

The injured suspect, who is in his thirties, was taken to hospital under police guard.

He will appear in court soon.
