Police in Gqeberha are investigating a case of armed robbery after a group of five men robbed passengers in a taxi on Wednesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says it is alleged that the men got into a taxi in Uitenhage Road, Sydenham and when they reached the corners of Govan Mbeki Avenue and Quick Street they robbed the passengers of their belongings.

She says when they got out of the taxi they approached a security guard who was working at a local shop and fired a shot at him.

The guard returned fire and shot one of the men in his upper leg.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says his four accomplices fled on foot and are still on the run.

She says the wounded suspect was arrested and is currently under police guard in hospital.

Police recovered three cellphones believed to have been stolen from the taxi.

The suspect will appear in court soon and more charges could be added as the investigation continues.
