One of the men who attacked the Ngcobo Police station in February of 2018 has been sentenced in the Mthatha High Court.

The attack that led to the death of five police officers and an off-duty soldier, made national headlines when the suspects were traced to the Mancoba Angels Church where a shoot-out ensued.

The suspects robbed the Ngcobo police station of several firearms and bulletproof vests that were recovered by the police during a raid at the church.

During the shootout, police killed seven suspects that included three of the church leaders.

Twenty-Three-year-old Siphesihle Tatsi, who was also a member of the church, was sentenced on Tuesday to 241 years in prison for his guilt on 21 charges.

Spokesperson for Police Colonel Katlego Mogale says 19 of the counts will run concurrently which means that Tatsi will spend an effective 18 years behind bars.

Shortly after the murders, 12 suspects were arrested but charges against some were withdrawn.

Col Mogale says some pleaded guilty but four others decided to go on trial.

He says Phumzile Mhlatywa (50), Phandani Monco (35), Kwanele Ndlwana (27)  and Siphosomzi Tshefu (age unknown) will be back in court on the 15th of September.

A month after the shooting police demolished the controversial church which was widely welcomed by members of the community.
