Life in prison for man who fled botched robbery at GQ bakery

Sibusiso Mchunu

The court case regarding the tragedy surrounding the well-known Le Bon Bakery in Gqeberha was concluded in the city's High Court on Wednesday.

Sibusiso Mchunu was sentenced to five life sentences even though he did not fire a single shot during the botched robbery in 2019.

A member of the police Flying Squad, Sergeant Dwane Kemp, and four of Mcunu's accomplices were killed during the robbery.

Mchunu was sentenced to a further eight years in prison for the attempted murder of Kemp's colleague, Sergeant Musa Hans, as well as 20 years and 18 years on charges of robbery and kidnapping.

Kemp's wife, Candice was six months pregnant with their son at the time of his death.

Candice said she was satisfied with the sentence.

"The accused showed no remorse whatsoever. I think that he deserved what he got today.

"I am glad to put a close to this chapter in my life so we can start moving forward. The sentencing was appreciated," she said.

During the trial, the court heard that Hans and Kemp were like brothers.

Hans, who returned fire, was granted indemnity from prosecution.

The court found that his evidence as a section 204 witness was truthful and credible.
