A suspect has been arrested in connection with the deaths of eight people who were gunned down while celebrating a birthday at a house in Kwazakhele in Gqeberha.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said the 33-year-old man was arrested on Friday when members of a special task team swooped on a unit at “Walmer Flats” following a tip-off.
He said police were informed that six suspects possibly linked to the 29 January shooting in Maqanda Street, were hiding out at the flats.
“As they arrived, only one suspect aged, 33, was found. Upon investigation, his involvement (in the murders) was confirmed,” Kinana said.
The suspect was arrested and is being detained at Mount Road police station before his court appearance in New Brighton on Monday.
Kinana said police are currently in pursuit of the remaining fugitives who escaped from Walmer Flats.
The January shooting incident left four men and three women dead, while the eighth victim, died later in hospital.
The homeowner, Vusumzi Sishuba, who was celebrating his birthday, and his brother Andile, were among those killed.
The others were Kholekile France, Liyema Poro, Mbuyiseli Mboya, Nandipha Koliti, Nomatamsanqa Mandla, and Thando Fibhi.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthethelele Mene, has expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the multi-disciplinary team of investigators who “spared no efforts to ensure a breakthrough is made in the cases.”
She said SAPS would oppose any bail application.
