Suspect killed in Kirkwood farm attack

Police at Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape are investigating an attack on a farm in the early hours of Wednesday morning in which a robbery suspect was shot dead and another wounded.

Sergeant Majola Nkholi says at least five armed suspects are believed to have been involved in the attack on a homeowner and his family.

He says the farmer managed to get hold of his firearm and that a suspect was killed and another wounded when shots went off in an ensuing scuffle.

Sergeant Nkohli says the other three suspects fled in a silver Toyota Avanza which was later spotted on the R75 heading towards Kariega, formerly Uitenhage.

Police managed to arrest all three men and confiscated their vehicle.

The suspects, aged between 23 and 50, are expected to appear in the Kirkwood Magistrate’s Court on Friday where they will face charges of attempted murder and robbery.

Meanwhile, Agri Eastern Cape has condemned the incident and identified the victim as Johannes De Lange, a member of the Glenconnor Agricultural Association.

Agri Eastern Cape Rural Safety Portfolio Chairman Alfonso van Niekerk said De Lange and an unidentified family member were stabbed multiple times during the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment in a nearby hospital.

He said they’re led to believe that further suspects were involved and that they’ve deployed all available resources to assist in the search for these suspects.
