A 27-year-old man is due to appear in an Eastern Cape court on Monday after being arrested after a shootout with police outside Mthatha.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said another man was killed in the shootout while other accomplices were able to get away.
He said the incident happened on Friday night when four gunmen stormed into a shop in Mtontsasa, and held everyone at gunpoint.
“The suspects managed to steal cash, cell phones and other items before fleeing the scene in the shop owner's bakkie. Police with the assistance from a tracking company , immediately, pursued the suspects,” he said.
Nkholi said as they closed in on the suspects, the occupants in a Toyota Avanza opened fire on police who retaliated.
Police recovered two unlicensed firearms with their serial numbers filed off at the scene, as well as cash and cell phones.
“The two firearms will be sent for ballistics analysis. The two vehicles, an Avanza and the owner's bakkie were confiscated for forensic investigation”.
The identity of the 35-year-old deceased has not yet been released.
