Eastern Cape police said the high-density Operation Shanela continues to produce “impressive” results, with over 1000 suspects arrested this past week.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the 1233 people arrested across the province included suspects wanted for murder and robbery as well as cash-in-transit heists.
She said during these operations from 2-8 October, R1 million worth of contraband was seized, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and over 62 000 litres of alcohol.
Naidu said in one operation, a truck travelling from Gauteng to East London was stopped at the entrance to Stutterheim and found to be loaded with unregistered medicines and skin lighteners.
“The value of the stock quantified is worth R870 000. Further investigations resulted in more medicines being seized, making the total value approximately R1 million,” she said.
In Gqeberha, several suspects were arrested for being in possession of illegal firearms.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major-General Zithulele Dladla said “extensive patrols, strategic interventions, and excellent collaboration with other law enforcement has contributed to the significant decreases in serious crimes in some districts”.
