supplied

One suspect has been shot dead and another arrested following an armed robbery at a jewellery shop in Plettenberg Bay.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies says three men were involved in the robbery that took place on the main road of Plett at around 8 am on Tuesday.

A manhunt was launched for the men who fled in a BMW that was spotted near Uniondale.

Sergeant Spies says police were deployed along all the exit routes from Knysna to Uniondale and when the car was spotted, a shootout ensued.

He says police later found the BMW deserted next to the road with a suspect inside who sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.

According to him, he was hitchhiking and the robbers picked him up along the side of the road to give him a ride.

He was transported to a nearby hospital and his version of events will form part of the investigation.

Sergeant Spies says a short while later a woman was forced out of her Hyundai on the N9 at Uniondale Heights by the suspects who fled from the getaway vehicle.

Police managed to bring the car to a halt and arrested one suspect while another one, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds was declared dead on the scene.

Some of the stolen jewellery was recovered and police also confiscated a pistol.

The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected.
