On Wednesday, three officials working at the St Albans Correctional Centre on the outskirts of Gqeberha were stabbed by inmates.
National Spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services Singabakho Nxumalo says two inmates at the Medium B section stabbed the officials during breakfast.
He says a full-scale investigation will be launched and legal steps will be taken against the perpetrators.
Nxumalo said the behaviour is condemned and cannot go unpunished.
He said the injured staff were being treated and are receiving the necessary support.
The nature of their injuries was not divulged.
Just a few weeks ago Correctional Services Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, led a search operation at St Albans.
