The Polish immigrant who assassinated SA Communist Party leader, Chris Hani in 1993, is a free man.

Sixty-nine-year-old Janusz Walus was released from prison on Wednesday after serving 29 years in prison.

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola says Walus will be under strict parole conditions and will serve two years under community corrections.

Walus was supposed to be released a week ago but was stabbed by a fellow inmate and had to receive medical attention.

The order from the Constitutional Court has divided the nation and resulted in widespread condemnation from the ANC, SACP and Hani's wife, Limpho.

Meanwhile, the man accused of stabbing Walus is reportedly on a hunger strike.
