Mossel Bay police launched a manhunt on Tuesday for nine suspects who tried to rob the Engen garage on the N2 near Dana Bay.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, said they also tried to rob a cash-in-transit vehicle on the premises, before randomly shooting at motorists and wounding one man.
He said their "preliminary investigation" the nine stormed into the Engen garage at around 2 pm.
Kapp said they tried to rob the cashiers but then allegedly started to panic before trying to rob a cash truck on the premises.
He said eye-witnesses told police that the suspects started to randomly shoot at motorists at the premises, wounding one man.
The gang fled in a white double cab bakkie with registration number CAA 7665 in the direction of Cape Town.
No one has yet been arrested.
WO Kapp says the Hawks have now taken over the investigation.
