Suspect keeps promise and hands himself in

A 37 year old robbery suspect has kept his promise to police to hand himself over on Monday morning.

This followed an incident on Friday evening when a policeman, investigating the theft of diesel in the Storms River area, was robbed of his firearm following a struggle with the suspect.

Police spokesperson, lieutenant-colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the man fled with the policeman's gun but then called on Saturday morning to tell them where he had dumped the fire-arm and promised to hand himself over on Monday.

"On Saturday morning at about 6.30 the suspect phoned police and informed them of where he had dumped the firearm and he also promised to hand himself over on Monday morning. Police went to Mandela park and we found the stolen firearm and at about 7.30 this morning the suspect handed himself over to Stormsriver police. He will be charged for the illegal possesion of a firearm and ammunition as well as robbery. He will appear in court on Tuesday" Naidu said.
