Suspect commits suicide in Mossel Bay holding cell following arrest for attempted murder

A 30-year-old suspect who was arrested on Sunday night, after he opened fire on his neighbours in an upmarket Mossel Bay neighbourhood, is believed to have committed suicide.

The suspect, an employee at a private security company, was found dead in the police holding cells on Monday morning.

It appears that he hanged himself with his t-shirt.

The man was arrested after he fired at least seven shots at a family, through the closed door of a bathroom, where they were hiding.

The incident happened in Highstreet.

According to the police, the man had an argument with the victims, when he first smashed a window of their black Volvo.

Police say the deceased threatened to shoot the Van Deventers after their daughter tried to take pictures of him smashing the Volvo's windows.

Willeon was shot in his leg, his wife Annabell in her ankle and their daughter in her arm and leg.

The three victims were treated for their injuries in the Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital and discharged on Monday morning.

Police opened an inquest docket.
The name of the deceased will be released once his next of kin has been informed.
