Suspect behind bars for murdering East London metered taxi driver

Eastern Cape police have arrested a 27-year old man near Kei Bridge, following the murder of a metered taxi driver.

Butterworth police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha says it alleged that the taxi's owner received a call from an unknown man to fetch him in Vincent, East London in the early hours of Friday morning.

He says the owner then called his driver to go and fetch the person and take him to Amalinda.

Manatha says when the driver's girlfriend called him at around 6 am, he did not answer, and she subsequently phoned the owner of the taxi.

The matter was reported to the police, and investigations led them towards Butterworth.

Manatha says the suspect was spotted along N2 near Kei Bridge, and he was arrested at around 8 am.

The body of the 39-year old driver was found in the back seat of the taxi with stab wounds.

The suspect has been charged with murder, kidnapping and car hijacking and will appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The motive for the killing is not yet known.
