Suspect arrested with abalone in Gqeberha after high-speed chase

File

Police have arrested a 39-year-old man for the possession of abalone with a street value of R250 000.

Spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, says he was arrested in Kabega Park following a chase by SAPS members from Jeffreys Bay to Gqeberha on Monday.

He said the members received a tip-off about the abalone being transported in a Red Renault Kwid.

"They spotted the vehicle at about 11:20 driving towards Jeffreys Bay on the R102 road. When they turned their vehicle around, the driver of the KWID increased his speed," Beetge said.

He said the resultant chase continued along the R102, then on to the N2 and Old Cape Road before coming to an end Brabant Road in Kabega Park where the driver lost control of the vehicle in rainy conditions.

Beetge said the driver attempted to flee but was swiftly arrested.

On searching the vehicle, large black bags containing 2372 units of abalone were discovered and confiscated," he said.

The suspect is due to appear in court soon.
