BCM to commence with 'power curtailment' across the Metro

BCM Facebook

Buffalo City Municipality says that despite many of the Metro's high energy uses reducing electricity consumption by 20% on request, BCM is still unable to reach its targets to reduce the power load.

Now, BCM says it will commence load-shedding at all so-called curtailment customers during their time-slots on the load shedding schedule, and this will take place between 7 am and 7 pm daily, until further notice.

Spokesperson Samnkelo Ngwenya says they have consulted with the affected stakeholders who "were able to assist in this difficult process."

He says in technical terms, curtailment is an action that reduces the amount of electricity generated to maintain the balance between supply and demand, which is critical for avoiding blackouts.

Buffalo City Metro is also appealing to all residents to play their part and to switch-off all non-essential appliances while business and government departments are also urged to ensure that all office lights are switched off after working hours.

"BCM is exploring various avenues towards becoming an energy self-sufficient metropole, and details of this will be announced on Tuesday," said Ngwenya.

"This is in line with the fact that in August 2021, the government had expanded its licence exemption for independent power producers from 1 megawatt up 100 megawatts."
