Police from the Mount Road cluster have arrested a 36-year-old man from New Brighton in Port Elizabeth in connection with a shooting incident outside the Bridge Shopping Centre on Monday.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 30-year-old victim was walking with his friend towards the entrance of the mall when someone in a white Ford vehicle called out his name.
She says when the man peeked into the window on the passenger side, a shot was fired hitting him in the head. The driver then sped off.
He was rushed to hospital where he is still receiving treatment.
Colonel Naidu says the suspect then went to police to open up a case of kidnapping whereby he alleged that his car was taken by kidnappers before he was dropped off in Korsten.
The vehicle was found abandoned by community members in Korsten on Monday afternoon.
Colonel Naidu says the suspect was subsequently arrested and will appear in the PE Magistrates' Court on Friday on a charge of attempted murder.
She says the suspect is known to the victim but the motive for the shooting remains unclear at this point.
