Suspect arrested for murder of PE flying squad member

Police have arrested a man suspected of gunning down PE Flying Squad member Dwane Kemp during an armed robbery at the Le Bon Bakery in Central last Monday.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi of the Hawks says the 24-year-old suspect was detained by the Hawks’ Serious organised Investigation unit at his parent’s residence in Algoa Park, Port Elizabeth, on Sunday.

Four armed robbers were killed during the shoot-out in the bakery while a 5th managed to escape.

Police immediately initiated the 72-hour activation plan, leading to yesterday's arrest.

Brigadier Mulaudzi says the suspect is expected to appear at the New law courts in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday where he will face five charges of murder, attempted murder, business robbery, possession of firearm without a licence, and possession of ammunition without a licence.

The National Head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Lebeya has hailed the success as a significant breakthrough in dealing with those who are bent on killing law enforcement officials in the country

Police Minister Bheki Cele, who said on Saturday at the funeral service of the late Constable Kemp that he wanted the fifth suspect arrested, commended the Hawks and the men in blue on a job well done.
