Most of the Eastern Cape’s 4791 voting stations were open on the final weekend of voter registration as the national election looms.
At the end of registration on Sunday 4757 voting stations were open while protests by residents prevented 34 voting stations from opening in the King Sabata Dalinyebo Municipality.
A statement from the provincial joint operations centre and the Independent Electoral Commission, said: “chief among the community needs are services such as access to clean running water, houses, schools, roads and demarcation”.
They also commended the intervention by “national, provincial and local leadership” to provide solutions in those areas.
Law enforcement agencies also stepped in to deal with “intimidation, sporadic incidents of violent disruptions and damage to property”. The statement made no mention of any arrests.
It was also a sad moment for the Electoral Commission as an area manager in Amahlati Municipal area was killed in an accident. The official’s name has not been released.
Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance MEC, Fikile Xasa, has appealed to the people and the youth to visit the nearest offices of the IEC to register and to confirm their registration details.
