The Hawks in Gqeberha( Port Elizabeth) have arrested a 22-year-old man in Kwazekhele who is alleged to have been involved in a shooting incident last month where a police Sergeant was wounded and his vehicle hijacked.
Spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela says in February, two officers from New Brighton police were on a routine patrol when they were ambushed by four suspects while talking to a civilian.
The men approached the vehicle from all four sides and ordered the 40-year-old Sergeant Wongile Ntengo and the 31-year-old Sergeant Sonwabile Litole to get out of their vehicle.
Captain Mgolodela says a brief stand-off followed and Sergeant Ntengo was shot in the head and stomach.
Both Sergeants were then robbed of their official firearms, phones, bulletproof jackets and personal belongings before the robbers fled in the police vehicle, which was later found abandoned not far from the crime scene.
Captain Mgolodela says following a wide-spread search police finally managed to catch up to the suspect in Kwazekhele as he was trying to evade arrest.
He will appear in court on Thursday to face a charge of attempted murder, hijacking, and armed robbery.
Sergeant Ntengo, who was wounded in the robbery, is still in hospital receiving treatment.
