Port Elizabeth police arrested a suspect, after two men tried to steal a trolley full of goods at the Greenacres shopping centre on Saturday.
Police capt Stanley Jarvis says the men were confronted by a security guard, and one of the suspects tried to attack the guard with a screwdriver.
He says one of the men escaped at the taxi rank, while the other was arrested at a bus depot.
Jarvis says the arrested man was in possesion of a fire arm, and a shot was fired when he fell while trying to run away.
No one was injured, and the suspect will appear in court soon.
