Gqeberha police commended the alertness of the community which resulted in the arrest of a suspect and the seizure of an AK 47 rifle with ammunition in Algoa Park.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said Algoa Park police received information of suspicious people roaming around a shopping centre and parking area in the area.
She said police responded and as the suspects noticed them approaching they dropped a bag and started moving away on foot.
Janse Van Rensburg said an officer searched the bag and found an AK 47 with ammunition.
“With the assistance from the Crime Prevention members, they arrested one suspect (37) on charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.
The suspect will appear in the New Brighton Magistrate court during the week
