Port Elizabeth police have arrested a 27-year-old man after the charred body of a woman was found in Gelvandale early on Sunday morning.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said members of the community alerted police after the grim discovery was made in Van Duuren Street just before 6 am.
She said the identity of the woman has yet to be confirmed however she said a 21-year-old woman was reported missing to SAPS Gelvandale on Sunday morning.
Naidu said members of the Anti-Gang Unit who were on patrol were informed by a taxi driver about a man walking without a shirt on, had scratch marks on his body and his clothes had blood on it.
She said the man was arrested and detained on a charge of murder and rape.
Detectives are continuing with the investigation and the suspect is expected to appear in the Gelvandale magistrates' court on Tuesday.
