The cell phone data belonging to the only surviving suspect, charged with the murder of Gqeberha Flying Squad member Dwane Kemp, was at the centre of his trial at the city's High Court on Tuesday.

Sibusiso Mchunu stands accused of Kemp's murder and those of his four alleged accomplices who died during a botched robbery at the Le Bon Bakery in Central in 2019.

The State called Warrant Officer Charmaine Bosch to testify on the data analysis of the cell phone records belonging to Mchunu which tracked its whereabouts on the day of the robbery.

Bosch's analysis showed that the cell phone reception was picked up near the Le Bon Bakery around the time the robbery took place.

It also revealed that the vehicle used for the commission of the crime, which belonged to Mchunu's father, was also picked up near the same vicinity around a similar time.

Mchunu's lawyer Zolile Ngqeza told the court that his client was in the Central area with his father to look for his cousin and one of the suspects Mandisi Jezile, who died during the robbery.

Ngqeza said that Mchunu was looking for his cousin as they had heard a rumour that he had stolen his father's gun which was also used in the robbery.

He said that Mchunu denies going near Le Bon Bakery that fateful morning.

Mchunu's cousin, Jezille, and his three accomplices were shot and killed by Kemp's partner Sergeant Musa Hans who returned fire after one of the suspect's shot and fatally wounded his partner Constable Kemp.

It is the State's case that Mchunu managed to escape the scene but was arrested days later at his parent's home in Algoa Park.

The 25-year-old faces 16 charges, including five of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm

The trial is expected to continue on Wednesday.
