Sundays River municipality has outstanding debt of over one Million Rand

The DA in the Eastern Cape says it has appealed to the MEC for Cooperative and Traditional Affairs to pay an outstanding debt of over One- Million-Rand owed by the Sundays River Valley municipality.

According to the DA's Vicky Knoetze, the municipality has failed to make water payments to the lower Sundays River User Association since July this year.

Knoetze says failure to pay the debt would result in a suspension of water supply in Addo, Kirkwood and Paterson, on the first of December.

"Not only will this result in thousands of people not having access to water, it will have disastrous consequences on the economy of the area, which is presently the second largest contributor to the economy of the Eastern Cape" she said

Meanwhile Hundreds of people are currently marching to the Sundays River Valley Municipality to handover a memorandum.

The chairperson of the Makukhanye Rural Movement, Siyabonga Modikoe told Algoa FM News that they would be calling for the closure of a water canal, clean water and a playground for children in the area.

This, after 18 people, 16 of them children, drowned in the canal since 1984.
