UPDATE: Classes for the day have been suspended, this was confirmed by NMU Spokesperson Zandile Mbabela.
She says alternate teaching methods including online tutoring will continue.
According to a message doing the rounds this weekend, the EFF student command was calling on NMU students to a mass shutdown of the University.
Algoa FM News is receiving reports that entrances to the University's South and North Campus had indeed been barricaded closed with tree branches and those heavy-duty moveable yellow plastic road barriers before 6 am.
Students and coaches who'd arrived for an early morning training session at the Indoor Swimming centre on South Campus quickly decided to vacate the premises.
The EFF has said they want answers from NMU management about their safety plans.
In a terse response via their Twitter page on Sunday night, NMU Management reminded students that there is an agreed-upon policy in place that provides the channel for students to raise their grievances.
NMU said contravention of this policy will not be tolerated and will result in the appropriate course of action - but it would appear this warning as fallen on deaf ears.
The University also issued a detailed statement on its website regarding the criminal activities on campus and what the measures they have put in place.
