A Rhodes student has died following a fire at a student digs in Grahamstown.

Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, says the fire broke out at a house in Milner Street in the early hours of Thursday morning.She says its believed that the fire broke out in the kitchen.

Governder says the student's room was adjacent to the kitchen and he could not escape the blaze.The University confirmed to Algoa FM news that the victim was a student at Rhodes. They will issue a statement in due course.
