A 23-year-old Nelson Mandela University student has been detained on a charge of murder after turning the tables on his attackers, killing one of them.
Police said the man was walking home at around 5.30 on Sunday morning when he was confronted by two men, one armed with a knife, on the corner of Mackay and Campbell Streets in Central.
“He was robbed of his cell phone. The student grabbed the knife from the suspect and allegedly stabbed him,” said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.
She said the other robbery suspect was arrested by private security guards on patrol.
Naidu said the NMU student, as well as the alleged robber, will appear in court this week.
