Port Elizabeth police arrested a 36-year-old man who opened fire on patrons at a tavern who were arguing during Bafana Bafana’s Afcon qualifier against Nigeria on Saturday.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the alleged shooter was not part of the group at the tavern in Walmer Township.
“Ayanda Jamta, 24, was shot through the left side of his back and died on the scene while his friends, a 27-year-old male was wounded in his shoulder and the other victim, whose age is unknown, was shot several times in the body,” she said.
Naidu said the gunman fled but the quick response by SAPS members led to his arrest and the recovery of a revolver.
She said the gun was reported stolen in a housebreaking case in Walmer earlier this month.
The suspect will appear in court on Monday on charges of murder and attempted murder.
