Strike looming in bus sector

A strike is looming in the country’s passenger bus sector with unions giving employers notice of a strike.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa said it had issued a notice to inform Employers in the Bus passenger sector of its intention to strike.

“Despite the CCMA’s attempts to mediate between ourselves and the employer bodies, we have reached a deadlock, and therefore we have been forced to down tools,” Numsa said.

“The Employers have arrogantly rejected our just demands for a living wage, and for improved working conditions,” the union said.

Numsa said that the strike will commence on Wednesday, with the union “advising commuters to make alternative arrangements for the Easter weekend as unfortunately, buses will not be operational.”

The union called on “businesses to extend the same generosity as they did for the #AntiZumaMarch and give workers time off so they can fight for a dignified life for themselves and their families”.

Algoa Bus in Nelson Mandela Bay said they were in negotiations to prevent the strike from happening.

“If by tomorrow (Tues) there is still no agreement on the wage negotiations then the buses will not run from Wednesday, 12th April 2017,” the bus company said.
