Environmental Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa says her department will be preparing a Strategic Environmental Assessment for fracking in the Karoo, which will include a consideration of the regional geology.
Replying to a question in the National Council of Provinces, the Minister said that in addition there would be a “site specific environmental assessment process”.
Molewa said this would evaluate impacts on a site specific basis, and would be undertaken should an application for fracking be submitted to her department.
Asked about the findings of one geologist that too little was known about the geology of the Karoo to know whether fracking would make sound environmental and economic sense, she said she could not confirm the findings.
