The guesthouse at the Dijembe backpackers lodge at StormsRiver burnt to the ground in the early hours of this morning.
It could accommodate 22 people but was empty at the time.
The Communications manager for the lodge, Heston Gelderbloem, says he received a call that the guesthouse was burning at around 3am.
No-one was injured in the blaze and police and assessors are investigating.
Gelderbloem says they hope to have an answer by Thursday as to the cause of the fire.
He says the Backpackers component of the lodge is still operational with 16 guests booked in for this evening.
