Gqeberha police have arrested a suspect and recovered R3 million rand worth of copper wire that was stolen from a truck that was hijacked in Deal Party.
Police said the driver was confronted by five gunmen on Thursday afternoon after they blocked off his vehicle in John Tallant Road.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the driver was assaulted and forced into the back of the truck, before being dropped off at an unknown location.
She says about two hours later, members of the District Crime Combatting Unit received a tip-off and found the empty truck in a street in Kwazakele.
While on the scene, a member of the Public Order Police Unit received further information on the whereabouts of the stolen copper wire and proceeded to a storage facility in Burman Road.
Naidu says after searching the facility police recovered 27 pallets of copper, weighing 25 tons, as well as a signal jammer and a forklift.
She said the 36-year-old suspect, who had been renting the facility, was arrested and the vehicle confiscated.
He is due to appear in court soon.
