Stolen Catalytic converters worth R80 million found in Bloem warehouse

A 44-year-old man is in police custody after stolen Catalytic converters worth R80 million were found in his possession.

Police Spokesperson Sergeant Mahkomola Kareli says the Organised Crime Unit in the Free State received information about a warehouse in Bloemfontein that is possibly being used to store goods from hijacked trucks.

He says when police arrived at the industrial park in Bloemfontein on Wednesday they found the warehouse owner and the suspect who stored his property.

Police found 1680 boxes containing Diesel Engine Catalytic converters worth an estimated R80 million.

The suspect could not produce ownership of the goods and was subsequently arrested.

Sergeant Kareli says further investigations revealed that the loot came from a truck that was hijacked in May this year.

He says the truck was travelling from the Eastern Cape to the Gauteng Province when the driver was attacked by a group of unknown men near Venterstad.

The suspects put the truck driver in their bakkie and drove towards Bloemfontein where they met the suspect to arrange for storage of the cargo.

Sergeant Kareli says the truck was handed back to the driver without the cargo and police were informed.

Police are following up on leads and more arrests are expected.
