Police have issued a stern warning to licenced gun owners to practice responsible firearm use.
This after a 15-year-old boy died of a gunshot wound on Saturday.
Police Spokesperson Captain Mluleki Mbi says it is alleged that three teenagers were playing inside a house in Mdantsane outside East London on the 28th of May when one of the boys went to another room to fetch a firearm.
He says when they started to play with the gun a shot went off hitting one of the boys in his lower body.
The child was rushed to hospital but the family never reported the incident to police.
Mbi says once the child died the mattter was investigated.
He says their initial investigation showed that the safe's key was easily accessible to the child and the safe was not mounted onto the wall, as required by law.
A case of failure to safeguard a firearm and an inquest is under investigation.
