Sterkstroom matrics need new venue to write exams after school burns down

The Eastern Cape Department of Education said alternative arrangements will be made for matric students at Sterkstroom after their school burned down in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Department's spokesperson Mali Mtima said: "During our state of readiness plan we made agreements with local municipalities to provide us with halls should a disaster occur. This is a disaster and the municipality will assist us as it indicated it would when there is a dire need."

Mtima said officials from the district have been dispatched to access the extent of the damage at the historic school.

"They will determine whether we need to rebuild or refurbish the school as only one class was gutted in the fire," said Mtima.

Last month, four suspects were arrested for barricading roads and torching a Municipal office during a violent service delivery protests in the area.

He added that the cause of the fire was not yet known.

Police are investigating a case of arson.
