The Department of Correctional Services says the decision to place Oscar Pistorius under correctional supervision has no bearing on the state's pending appeal against his conviction on a charge of culpable homicide.
Department spokesperson, Manelisi Wolela, says the decision taken by the parole board of the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre was a separate and independent process and should be treated as such.
"The Correctional supervision and Parole board of Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria, on the 5th of June, approved the placement of Oscar Pistorius under correctional supervision effective from the 21st of August" he said.
The Parole board approved, based on the various sections of the relevant Act.
But, the news was met with shock by the Steenkamp family.
Attorney and family spokesperson, Tania Koen, says were they informed on Monday morning about Pistorius' upcoming release.
"The family was shocked about the news. They feel they live with the sadness of Reeva's death every day. They don't feel 10 months is enough for taking the life of somebody, whether it was their a daughter or a criminal behind the door. It does not send out the proper message and deterrent that it should" she said
Meanwhile, Reeva Steenkamp's uncle Mike, said they are just taking it day by day.
Speaking in his personal capacity he said nothing they do or say would change or alter the situation.
