Steenkamp family appoints lawyer

Reeva Steenkamp's parents have appointed lawyers to protect their interests after their daughter was killed in the home of paralympian Oscar Pistorius.

June and Barry Steenkamp said in a statement that this was a very sad and traumatic time for them.

They said while they understood the intense media interest, the family would not be doing any interviews for the time being.

Pistorius was charged with murder after Steenkamp was shot four times at his luxury Pretoria home on Valentine's Day.
Attorney Mike Venter and senior counsel Dup de Bruyn have been appointed by the Steenkamp family.

Meanwhile, the news media should be mindful of what they broadcast and publish about Oscar Pistorius's murder case.
This is according to one of South Africa's media guru's, Anton Harber.
He says with Twitter playing a bigger role than ever in news coverage, there are no gatekeepers, widening the gap for gossip and ungrounded allegations to slip in.

He says this could have a negative and unfair impact on investigations - especially in Pistorius's case.

"The thing about Twitter is that everyone can do it so facts and evidence can mix with rumour and gossip, there are no gate keepers and it is instant. One would traditionally have expected a reporter to summarise the day's evidence in court as it flows one way and then the other. Now you have people responding to every little piece of evidence, it can carry serious risks"
