Statue stolen from Oliewenhuis

Police in Bloemfontein have confirmed that a bronze statue of the former Khoisan Chief, David Stuurman, was stolen from the Oliewenhuis garden this weekend. The statue forms part of a heritage site development initiated by the National Heritage Project(NHP). Police spokesperson Chaka Marope says the statue to the value of R500 000 disappeared between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning

Meanwhile Eastern Cape Khoisan activist, Christian Martin, says he's deeply disappointed at the theft of a statue of former Khoisan Chief, Dawid Stuurman, from the Oliewenhuis Garden in Bloemfontein this weekend.

Martin, who's also an ANC member of the Eastern Cape legislature, is campaigning for Stuurman's remains to be returned to South Africa from Australia.

He's also vowed in February last year not to cut his hair until Stuurman's remains are back in South Africa.

" At the moment we are busy with this campaign to make the role that Stuurman has played during colonisation and setting us as indigenous people free, that such news must come now is very, very sad" he said
