State wants lengthy jail term for PE bookkeeper

A Port Elizabeth man accused of theft and money laundering involving just over a million rand, appeared in the city's commercial crimes court on Wednesday.

According to the state, tax consultant, Tertius Stiemie, stole nearly a million rand from one of his clients between 2003 and 2011 and just over R32 000 from another client between May and July 2011.

He has pleaded guilty to the charges and faces a minimum sentence of fifteen years in prison.

During mitigation of sentence, defence lawyer Danie Gouws asked the court to consider that Stiemie had been a pathological gambler at the time of the offences and has since undergone treatment.

Gouws added that Stiemie was a first offender.

The State argued that Stiemie had abused his position of trust and asked for a lengthy term of imprisonment.

The case was postponed until the 4th February for sentencing.
