The state has called for bail to be denied to 21-year-old Port Elizabeth man, Brent Cunningham, who's accused of assaulting his former girlfriend, Shireen Ballan.
In his final arguments on Tuesday state prosecutor Benedict Wilson said the case had received widespread media coverage.
He questioned what message would be sent if Cunningham received bail.
Defence attorney Ryno Scholtz, said his client was not a flight risk nor would he be a danger to the community or himself.
Magistrate Gavin Juicy will rule on the bail application on Thursday.
