The state has called for life sentences to be imposed on an Eastern Cape man who is said to be one of the country's worst serial killers.
Final arguments were concluded in the Butterworth magistrate's court on Thursday, in the trial of 39-year-old Bulelani Mabhayi.
He pleaded guilty to 20 charges of murder, six of rape and 10 charges of house-breaking with intent to commit a crime.
The charges relate to his reign of terror in Tholeni Village near Butterworth, where women and children counted among his many victims.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, says while Mabhayi's legal counsel argued for reduced sentences, the state implored judge Noluthando Conjwa, to impose the maximum sentences for the crimes.
