The Kouga Municipality says the Sand River bridge at St Francis Bay, which was closed to traffic at about 8pm on Saturday, has collapsed.
Spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall says news fom their technical team on site is that it won't be possible to construct a pedestrian crossing - as too much of the bridge has washed away and the water is still flowing strongly.
She says people are crossing the river at own risk at a spot where the water is not flowing that strong.
Randall says their fire brigade is busy putting up ropes to assist people to cross.
She says the Oyster Bay - St Francis Bay road is also closed to all traffic, including 4x4 vehicles.
