St Albans warder and PE cop arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into prison


SAPS Management has warned employees who engage in corrupt and criminal activities that they will face the consequences and be prosecuted.

This follows the arrest of a Warrant officer from Port Elizabeth and a prison warder from St Albans.

Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says they were arrested by members of the Gang Task team for allegedly trafficking drugs into prison in exchange for cash.

It is alleged that the 48-year-old prison warder Ian van Rensburg from St Albans Correctional Services received drugs and cash from a person to smuggle to an inmate in prison. The transaction took place at the warder's house in Bethelsdorp on Wednesday. He was arrested the following morning.

Meanwhile the 48- year-old Warrant Officer Dawid Schoeman was arrested at the new law courts in Port Elizabeth and charged with drug trafficking and corruption.Naidu says it is alleged that the officer accepted drugs and cash from a person to give to an awaiting trial suspect in the holding cells at court.

After completing the transaction, the arresting officer found the suspect in possession of the drugs and money.

Both suspects appeared in court on Friday and was released on bail.Their next court appearance is on the 16th of August
